Like most casino games, poker can trace its roots to Europe and Asia; however, the game was developed and popularised during the 19th century in the United States. The game shares many similarities with the Persian game of As-Nas and the French poque — both games involved playing with five cards and incorporated bluffing — but it could be said that it was also influenced by the games of pochen, primero and brelan. Historians believe that French American settlers brought poque over to the United States, where the name was anglicised, and the rules gradually morphed into what we know as poker today.
